A recent study conducted by John Nihoff, a professor of gastronomy at the Culinary Institute of America, found that among eighteen- to fifty-year-old Americans, roughly a fifth of all eating takes place in the car. Face it. The French are smarter than us when it comes to eating. Surveys show they rarely snack. They consume most of their food at meals shared with others. Put these habits together and you have a food culture in which the French consume less calories than we do, yet enjoy them far more.
Look,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I'm a libertarian at heart. If this is how people want to take their meals, so be it. Of course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I wouldn't call them meals, necessarily. They're more like "eating occasions." Still, if this is how millions of my fellow Americans choose to receive their daily caloric intake, all I can say is... "Viva la France!"
"Eating with the fullest pleasure - pleasure, that is, that does not depend on ignorance - is perhaps the profoundest enactment of our connection with the world. In this pleasure we experience and celebrate our dependence and our gratitude, for we are living from mystery, from creatures we did not make and powers we cannot comprehend."
During our chat, he told me about a French co-worker who had just returned from her first trip to the United States. When he asked what about America had made the biggest impression on her, she said, "I can't believe you eat in your cars."
The reality is agriculture, technology and the free market have succeeded almost too well. Food today is so easy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so cheap and so plentiful that we forget our ancestors spent most of their waking hours hunting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], growing, producing and preparing meals. It defined their lives. For hundreds of millions in the Third World, it still does.
This attitude fosters a more deliberate approach to eating. Our meals become a sort of spiritual practice where gratitude,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fellowship and conversation are more important than simply "strapping on the feedbag." We eat less and enjoy it more. Not coincidentally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we look and feel better, too.
"We forget that, historically, people have eaten for a great many reasons other than biological necessity. Food is also about pleasure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about community,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], about family and spirituality, about our relationship to the natural world, and about expressing our identity. As long as humans have been taking meals together, eating has been as much about culture as it has been about biology...
If we eat mindlessly, we experience a disconnection. We miss a chance to bond with our friends and family. We lose our deep connection to the earth. We forego an opportunity to give thanks. And that's regrettable.
We both had a chuckle over this. To Parisians,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eating is a sacrament. Even a short lunch has to include fresh bread, good wine, and time enough to enjoy it.
While in France a couple years ago, I bumped into my colleague Addison Wiggin, an American publisher (and now filmmaker) who was living in Paris at the time.

*note what was discovered by “She” in this interview is that this painting Timeless Keepers was painted in Los Angeles at a gallery in Downtown LA…”She” had sat out in front of that gallery after a profound dinner with some friends and decided that there was some powerful energy in that gallery that night but “She” needed to go home and integrate all that “she” had received earlier in silence.
He replied, “Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], She is amazing and I am going to work with her in the future.” “She” shared how this image in particular was a reflection of her. All the elements and all the messages spoke to her. “She” went to hand the card back to DoktorJ and he said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Its yours!” With a big, “Thank you!”, “She” tucked it in her journal with a contentment and gratitude in her heart for the delivery of such a special gift.
As “She” moved deeper into the store, another painting captured her attention, “Work in Progress”. It perfectly described her own sense of self and current understanding of her essence. Her eyes began to move around the store taking in this artist’s work. “She” felt an inner connection with each piece and then asked Rychalle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the operator of the store,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Who is the artist?”,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as she pointed to one of the paintings. She replied, “Autumn Skye from Powell River”. One person has told she, “You can not run from your destiny.” “She” would agree.
“She” arrived at a small boutique in the lower Gibson’s, located on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia. It was a cool and crisp evening and the sun was beginning to set. The store, Costal Creativity, welcomed “She” and “He” in and presented itself as a playful stage for the creations of local artists. As “She” entered,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a large tree like structure filled with these expressive hats captured her attention. The variety of textures and colors created a canopy of fanciful head adornments. “She” intently studied each hat, wondering which one would come home with her someday.
Then, “He” stopped and looked at the wall and said with a big smile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “Triplets.” A painting entitled, “The Significance of Three”
“She” looked forward to hearing from Autumn and sharing her work with the world. It was in this interview that, “She” had a deeper understanding of the Autumn and her interconnection to the universal and cosmic feminine.
“She” would like to introduce you to Autumn Skye Morrison…a soul sister, a shining light and an inspiration to the divine feminine dancing within “She”.

It held all the symbols and messages that “She” embodies and holds sacred in her soul and heart. The canvas visually told the story of “Her” journey. It was as if Skye had painted this picture for her. “She” slowly turned the card over and the words just lifted themselves off the paper. “She” read it silently to herself,
“I paint in celebration of this fantastic adventure. I paint to Inspire, and to be inspired. Each canvas takes me on a journey, and as my paintbrush follows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each time I am lead back to my center.
My Paintings are a mirror, a reflection of our light and shadow, our feminine essence, and our ancient divinity.” -Autumn Skye Morrison.
“She” took a deep breath and smiled…”She” had found a soul sister. “She” gently folded the card in half and placed it in her hand bag. When, “She” returned to the cottage “She” wrote Autumn and asked if it would be possible to feature her work and expressed how she felt they were kindred spirits.
On the day, “She” was leaving for the City of the Angels, she took the ferry back to Vancouver with the one and only, DoktorJ. This was the second time they spent together in each others physical presence. As “She” seemed to ramble on about the large rock that looked like ET and the universe. DoktorJ just graciously listened and for some reason suddenly pulled out this card from his backpack and handed it to “She”. It was the Timeless Keepers by Autumn Skye. “She” smiled and asked, “Do you know her?”
“She” studied the canvas and the three bare milky white bodies all appearing to be a different reflection of self laying across a bed of leaves. “She” noticed the three golden rosettes embedded on the painting. It was not until “she” looked closer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when “She” saw the many pages from an old book creating the background and a metaphorical wall filled with the answers to someone’s questions.
“She” smiled at “He” appreciating his adoration for the feminine and his ability to always enjoy her beauty. While, “She” was still trying to make sense of her own understanding of the feminine essence and how to further embrace the collective feminine energy.

“Angry”, “mad”, “irritable”,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “frustrated”, “annoyed”, “irate”, “seething”, “agitated”, and “cranky” are all labels for anger. This list, although it could be a lot longer, reflects varying degrees in intensity of anger. Anger, although a normal emotion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], can be problematic for recovering alcoholics and addicts who not feel fully competent in dealing with their anger. Many recovering alcoholics and addicts have an unrealistic expectation that when they get clean and sober, that they will not have to experience uncomfortable feelings, especially anger. They may believe that they are doing something wrong in their recovery because they have anger or other uncomfortable feelings. Family members may believe that their alcoholic/addicted loved one has relapsed because s/he is angry, or is expressing their anger in old, pre-recovery ways.
Cravings can continue or can return after a reprieve. People often feel irritable and angry when craving. They may be angry with themselves for cravings or thinking about using. They may be consciously or subconsciously planning their relapse and interpret family member behavior as control, or attempts to keep them using. Cravings are stressful and the newly recovering addict can feel especially sensitive to criticism and feel angry about things or events that would not have bothered them on a different day under different emotional circumstances.
Newly recovering addicts can also experience other uncomfortable feelings, not know how to identify those feelings (much less work through them), and convert them into anger. Since anger is the secondary emotion, they may never get to the real feelings or even the real issue to address it. An example is fear. Fear is very common in early recovery. Many alcoholics/addicts do not allow themselves to feel their fear and quickly convert any fear to anger. An addict experiencing unidentified fear may have an array of negative consequences from his/her "anger", when much of the time simply identifying the fear and sharing it with someone else is enough to reduce it or neutralize it. It is also quite common for addicts in early recovery to experience a return of anxiety. Inadequate or ineffectual skills for reducing anxiety and managing stress can lead to irritability.
The family members of alcoholics/addicts also have anger. Instead of the addict being grateful for family members getting them into treatment and saving his/her life, the addict is angry at them. They cannot understand this because they remind the addict that it is, and has been, the family that has been holding down the fort, making all the payments, taking care of the kids,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the bills, the house,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc. The family member has been taking care of everything and the addict is mad at them!
The newly recovering addict does not understand why the family member is not giving him/her credit for his sacrifice and understanding how difficult this has all been. They complain of the making the effort to do the things that family members have been asking them to do for a long time, and family members not noticing the effort or simply expecting it without praise, support or “thank you”. From the family member's perspective,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the fact that the addict wants a reward for doing what everyone else is expected to do, is inconceivable. Neither understands the other's frame of reference.
Alcoholics/addicts may not yet know how to work through contemporary sources of anger, and may have not yet resolved old hurts, slights, and resentments. Seething, residual, unresolved, underlying anger is problematic for the newly recovering person, who may become vulnerable to relapse.
Initially, detox may have something to do with it. As the addict makes the transition into early recovery, the numbing properties of the drugs on their brains begin to wear off and feelings come back with a vengeance. They may have been numbing feelings about relationship issues, or situations in life that they felt helpless about changing. They may be angry with themselves for poor choices or any number of other reasons. When they stop using,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the anesthesia for feelings wears off. Most of the situations or conditions that lead to the creation of the feelings that they sought to escape have remained the same. The anger returns about these issues.
It comes as a surprise to many recovering alcoholics/addicts and their families that the recovering person has so much anger. The recovering person and family members may be working hard to figure out why the anger is still there. In reality, all people experience anger at one time or another. Emotionally healthy people work through their anger as it occurs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and let it go. There are many reasons why a recovering person would continue to feel angry once they have quit drinking/using.
Family members may be angry that the addict is not recovering far enough fast enough. They are not changing in the ways that the family member fantasized that it would happen when they finally quit drinking/using. Family members may still feel compelled to "help" by making suggestions, by guiding, manipulation, etc.
From the newly sober addict's perspective, the family member is attempting to control, with constant checking up on him/her, and a general lack of trust. When family members do this or question whether they have relapsed, the addict feels hurt and angry. Family members,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], themselves at the beginning of their own recovery,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have often made the addict responsible for the family wellness. They often think and behave as if their own recovery is contingent on the health of the recovery of the addict. Family members and addicts are often in relapse at the same time. And anger is a common symptom that it is happening.

The addict is learning in AA or NA that s/he can't afford resentments, which is unresolved, recycled anger. Yet everyone experiences anger. Not knowing how to appropriately deal with anger and let go of it leads to resentment. People often act out anger or resentment in non-conscious ways. Anger and resentment can also be triggers for cravings and relapse in addicts and in family members. Anger can trigger a return to maladaptive compulsive behavior or responses in family members. A family member is in full-blown relapse when s/he returns to spending more time trying to figure out how the make the addict straighten up than on ones' own self-care and recovery.
Sometimes the newly recovering person is still angry about how they came to be in recovery. They may be angry at law enforcement, the judge, the boss, the wife, the family in general,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or society for not condoning active addiction. They may be angry with everyone involved in the intervention.
As the body and mind continues to detox,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thinking continues to clear up and improve. Reality comes into clearer focus. The addict may feel anger at himself/herself for getting to this point and not taking control over their own use, long before now. They may still believe that they could have regained control and still be able to use. The newly recovering person,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], still not very adept at processing feelings, may project blame and responsibility for their feelings onto others. Although they may be angry with themselves, the family may still be getting the brunt of it.
